Caring for your T&G Product

Consumer Advice

Pine

Products produced in natural pine are finished with a non-toxic cellulose lacquer. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth, and dry with clean paper towelling. They should be stored in an airy position away from direct heat.

Hevea

All T&G Hevea products have been sealed with a non-toxic protective lacquer to enhance the appearance and to help prevent the absorption of water when washed. To clean simply wipe over the surface with a damp cloth or wash in warm soapy water, but do not soak. As with all woodware, Hevea can dry out with use, so an occasional wipe with vegetable oil does much to restore the original natural appearance.

Wooden Boards – Oak, Beech or Ash

To clean, simply rinse under hot water using detergent and dry with clean paper towelling as tea towels made from fabric are known to harbour germs. If a board has accidentally been soaked, the surface can be hardened again by scattering table salt thickly over the board and leaving it overnight to absorb all the moisture. Salt also has a slightly abrasive cleaning action if rubbed onto the board dry and will take away the smell of garlic and onion fairly successfully. Lemon juice can be effectively used to bleach out stains on chopping boards. As with any wooden product a board should never be soaked in water for any length of time. If it is, it will swell and then warp once the drying process begins. A common problem resulting from busy modern lifestyles is to rinse or wash a chopping board and then leave it standing to dry. It is important to point out that if this method is adopted the board should never be allowed to stand upright on its jointed end. The best way is to dry off excess water and rest it on its side. Both sides of the board can be used for food preparation. However to prevent cross contamination, keep one side for raw meats and the other for cooked foods or vegetables. It is also important to store clean and dry boards so that their surfaces do not touch each other, thus eliminating the build up of bacteria between their surfaces. A final tip to enhance the appearance and ensure the longer life of a chopping board is to coat it frequently with T&G Wood Treatment Oil. As well as Beech Boards we also carry a range of boards made from Polyethylene and Hevea, these can be found in the Assorted Product section which also contains hygiene information in relation to wooden boards. T&G´s professional oiled beech boards are made from the finest Beechwood and are oiled during production with mineral oil to enhance the appearance, and to ensure a longer working life.

What Is The Most Hygienic Type Of Board

Undoubtedly, the most hygienic chopping board is going to be one that is washed most frequently, regardless of what it is made of. Wooden boards are very hygienic, as recent research carried out at a leading American University has proved. Their findings have shown that wooden surfaces are capable of decontaminating themselves, without the aid of bleach or harsh cleaning solutions. It is not entirely clear how wood´s defence mechanism works, but seemingly the bacteria are sucked into the porous surface and "strangled" by the anti-microbial chemicals with which living trees protect themselves. Their tests proved that bacteria died very quickly on wood, but thrived on boards made from all types of polymer and rubber, and wood was simply the best hygienic choice. A full report giving details of tests is available by contacting T&G´s Marketing Department.

Ash & Beechwood Trolleys

After use, clean the top of the trolley and dry carefully, preferably with clean paper towelling. TAKE CARE NOT TO OVERWET the surface. We recommend that the trolleys are oiled throughout their working life, using T&G Wood Treatment oil, to preserve the appearance and to enrich the wood. There is no hard and fast rule as to how often they should be oiled because it will depend on usage. However, once a week for the first month and once a month for the first year is probably enough.

Hevea Trolleys

Every trolley top is suitable for cutting and chopping. However, as surface cuts and scratches can spoil the appearance, most people use a chopping board placed on top. Wooden surfaces are ideal for food preparation as they are sympathetic to knives and hygienic to use. Recent research has shown wood to be an excellent material on which to prepare food because of its ability to decontaminate itself without the aid of bleach or harsh cleaning solutions.

Marble

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Acidic foodstuffs can pit marble as can prolonged contact with water.

Marble is a natural product and as such the hardness of the surface will vary. Cutting with a knife on this product is not advisable as it is likely to cause scratching of the polished surface. The use of acidic foods on this board could damage the polished surface and is not recommended.

Operation Instructions & Guarantees For T&G Products

Traditional Salt & Pepper Mills

It is important only to use the peppermill for peppercorns and the salt mill for top quality sea or rock salt crystals. If salt is used in a traditional peppermill, it will certainly corrode the grinder, resulting in rapid seizure of the whole mechanism.

Instructions for use.

To fill: Where the mill has a top knob, simple unscrew and lift off the top section of the mill.

To use: hold the lower mill body in one hand whilst rotating clockwise the top section or crank handle with the other.

To adjust: the grind setting can be adjusted from coarse to fine using two different methods depending on the model type: 1) by turning a special black grind setting wheel located at the top of the mill. 2) turning the knob at the top of the mill, for fine grind tighten, for coarse loosen.

To care: when adjusting the mill take care not to over tighten as this can cause damage to the mill body. A spot of cooking oil added to the thread of the metal spindle, where it meets the metal knob at the top, will help to keep the knob and the thread in good working order. Ensure that pepper mills with a steel mechanism are suitable for grinding both salt and pepper.
