1. The Grind Setting Is Too Tight (or Too Loose)
The problem:
Most pepper mills have an adjustable grind setting. If it’s tightened too much, the mechanism may struggle to turn. If it’s too loose, the pepper may fall through without grinding properly.
How to fix it:
• Adjust the top nut or base dial slightly.
• Turn a little at a time and test the grind.
• Find the sweet spot between coarse and fine.
If your mill suddenly stops working after adjustment, this is the first thing to check.
2. The Peppercorns Are Too Large or Damp
The problem:
Not all peppercorns are created equal. Very large, soft, or damp peppercorns can clog the grinding mechanism.
Moisture is often the hidden culprit, especially if the mill is stored near steam (for example, next to a hob).
How to fix it:
• Empty the mill completely.
• Check for clumped or swollen peppercorns.
• Refill with high-quality, dry whole black peppercorns only.
Avoid pre-ground pepper or flavoured pepper mixes, as these can damage the mechanism.
3. The Mechanism Is Blocked
The problem:
Over time, fine pepper dust can build up inside the grinding mechanism. This can stop the burr from catching and cracking the peppercorns properly.
How to fix it:
• Empty the mill.
• Turn it upside down and gently tap to remove debris.
• Use a dry brush (like a small pastry brush) to clear out loose particles.
Never rinse the internal mechanism with water, as moisture can cause corrosion and long-term damage.
4. The Mill Is Overfilled
The problem:
It might seem efficient to fill your pepper mill to the top, but overfilling can restrict movement inside the chamber.
How to fix it:
• Leave a small gap at the top when refilling.
• This allows the peppercorns to move freely and feed into the grinding mechanism properly.
A little breathing room makes a big difference.
5. Natural Wear Over Time
The problem:
If your pepper mill is many years old and used daily, normal wear can reduce grinding efficiency, particularly with lower-quality mechanisms.
At T&G Woodware, our mills are designed with durable grinding mechanisms built for longevity. However, like any kitchen tool, proper care helps extend performance.
How to prevent issues long-term:
• Store away from moisture and steam.
• Only use dry, whole peppercorns.
• Clean occasionally to prevent dust build-up.
• Avoid forcing the mechanism if it feels stuck.
